Ford common ECU failures
Ford ECU list

Ford Focus & Mondeo ECU’s have common problems with misfire on two cylinders and complete non start due to lack of ignition output to the coils.

We can rebuild your own Ford Focus or Mondeo ECU and return it to you with a 2 year warranty.

Ford Focus Dash/Dashboard Instrument Cluster
dash focus2

This is a very common failure for the Ford Focus instrument cluster - normally the dash will fail  - we also get reports that the engine sometimes cuts out

Ford Puma 1.7i 16v(MHA)1997 - 2002

The owner of this Puma knew that something was wrong from the lightness of his wallet. At 200 miles per tank of petrol instead of the normal 350 it would be cheaper to run a Jaguar. The problem had started after his car had been serviced so he suspected that the garage had done something to cause it. They hadn’t , it was a fault that would have occurred anyway , but the garage trade is well used to the “It was all right until you touched it”. A car is bound to go wrong at some time , and if that happens within recent memory of someone to blame then they get it in the neck. The car ended up with us since the garage concerned felt that the fault needed more specialist attention than they could give. Our first line of investigation for any engine management fault is to look at the fault codes that the car may have left in it’s electronic control unit. (Ecu)These should tell what is wrong with the car – but often they don’t because a lot of faults elude the system. If they work then fault codes are great, saving sometimes hours of time in tracing faults. but all to often they come up with a fault code of “No fault found” while the car is left hacking and coughing itself to death on the workshop floor. In this case no fault codes were found so it was on to the long route of checking signals in and out of the car’s brain (Ecu), and checking it’s fuel pressures. We found a fault with the signal in from the air flow meter , which made us suspect a faulty unit, but on closer investigation found that the unit itself was Ok, - good since it cost telephone numbers – it was caused by a fault with it’s earthing circuit. Sorting this out fixed the problem. We often find though that with faults of this nature parts are renewed that don’t need to be.

Ford Mondeo 1993 - 1996 1.8ltr 16v (RKA)

Mike Summers, Surrey

Q - We have a 1995 ford Mondeo Zetec it runs really rough and keeps cutting out when ever you come to idle, and on acceleration its like its running on kangaroo juice, taken the car to ford twice and they changed the idle air valve, air flow meter and the coolant temp sensor to no avail. I’ve even tried winding up the throttle stop but even this doesn’t stop it stalling aaaarrgh!

Answer -

Relax this is quite a commen problem with mondeo zetec systems, it sounds like you’ve realy driven round the houses trying to find this fault, the problem is probably staring you right in the face all you need to do is listen for it, can you hear a sucking sound around the coil packs I bet you can. This is caused by a little rubber T piece that connects manifold vacume to the EGR system under the coil pack, these little T pieces are always splitting and cause the exact same problem that you’ve just described.

Emission Failures -

High CO & low lamna reading.   common causes of rich running faults are the lamna sensor or the ECU (engine control unit) both of these parts are relatively simple to check,  to check the sensor strip back the insulation on the signal wire from the lamna sensor, this wire is usually black.  Then hold the bare wire between your finger and thumb then touch your other hand on to the battery positive the internal resistance of your body will give 1volt at your finger tips which is what the sensor would give out when the engine runs rich, if the emissions come down then you have a faulty lamna sensor or wiring but if the emissions remain the same then the ECU is a possible fault. For more information on ECU testing click on ECU

High CO with normal lamna reading. If the oxygen level is below 1% then a high CO with a normal lamna reading can only be one thing - the catalytic converter, when ever you get this reading the catalyst should be condemed. But always make sure you check the oxygen level first, if its high (over 1% at speed) then you’ve got a leaking exhaust or engine runing problems.

Ford, all models 1986 - onwards

Hessitation, power loss, missfire. This type of problem can be one of the most time consuming faults to find because the problem often is only slight and the fault only shows up when the car is being driven under load. One common cause of this is a fouled or sticking injector.
